THE EAST SIDE

sint joris bayFrom the buzzy inhabited part of the island you can drive east. There are two main roads leading to this area, the Caracasbaaiweg and the Santa Rosaweg. Although there are also smaller roads that you can drive trough. This part of Curacao has the most luxurious residential areas. In this part of the island you will also find most marinas. It is popular area amongst foreigners who settle and build large villas. These neighborhoods are fun to visit and admire. Some are closed resorts, such as Jansofat and Zuurzak. Others are freely accessible such as Jan Thiel, Brakkeput and Vista Royal.

SPANISH WATER

spanish water bayThe most beautiful villas are located on our “Beverly Hills” inland great bay The Spanish Water, which consists of different residential areas. Seru Boka Estate is the newest of these. In recent years, large modern villas have been built that also house celebrities. Living at this inland bay is very popular amongs those wo have enough resources. Land prices are therefore high. What makes Spanish Water attractive is that the bay is connected to the sea. And this connection is through a long stretch of beautiful beach called Barbara Beach. The holiday resort Sandals that opened in 2022 is located on this beach.

Spanisch Water Bay is also Curacao’s most visited water sports spot. It is a lively come and go of yachts, speedboats and sailboats. You will also see a lot of canoes and windsurfers because it is a very cozy place to sail around. There are several water sports centers located. A boat trip along the bay is therefore recommended as a nice outing. You can also choose to visit Santa Barbara Beach via the long scenic road that leads through Santa Barbara Plantation. But consider that a day pass for Sandals Resort is not cheap. Golf lovers should check out the unique golf course at Santa Barbara as its one of the most beautiful designed in the caribbean.

ZANZIBAR

zanzibar jan thielThe relatively new Vista Royal district will be found within the Jan Thiel area. The architecture of the houses there is captivating. The road there leads to several mini holiday resorts such as Livingstone, Papagayo, Morena and Chogogo. It is therefore a popular holiday area. Zanzibar is a tourist hotspot with restaurants and a large beachfront. The bar on site is crowded with a young crowd on Saturdays at sunset. The attraction is live music or a popular DJs. Next to Zanzibar is a small shopping mall and the Papagayo Beach area. A large saltwater pool has been constructed here, where children like to swim and play. It’s a chill safe hangout place for families with youngsters. This beach charges a small entrance fee.

CARACAS BAY

caracasbaai curacaoAt the roundabout at the end of the Caracasbaaiweg you can turn right into Jan Thiel. If you turn left you will pass a public beach called Caracasbaai. It is a cozy beach with two restaurants that serve local food, Sea Horse and Briza do Mar. On the weekend there is a crowd on the beach because local people like to barbeque with family and friends. During weekdays it is quite quiet. It is a place where you can see a lot underwater. So bring your goggles.

If you drive along the beach you will arrive at the Caracasbay Peninsula. It is a large area where tankers and large yachts tied up at the quays. What attracts tourists are the two small secluded beaches, Baya and Directorsbay. Next to Baya beach is an Olf Fort, Fort Bekenburg. The fortress is worth a visit and is freely accessible. The scenery around the ford is special as you have a great view over the sea and hills from different sides. The Tug Boat at Baya beach is a popular snorkeling spot there (sunken ship). The tug is located at a relatively shallow depth and is surrounded by tropical-colored fish.

SINT JORIS

sint joris bay curacaoThere is a second large inland bay in the eastern part of Curacao, called Sint Joris. It is a quiet wetland located in the middle of nature where many birds nest. Fishermen have been coming here for decades as it is a breeding ground for many species of fish. This bay, which is surrounded by mangrove forests, has different parts. Kite Beach, the point where all kite borders on the island practice their sport on weekends, is a nice place to visit (on windy days). You can also book kite Board or Wingfoil lessons or a SUP tour along the mangroves. The area around it is also popular for mountain bikers and hikers. The bay is connected to the rough north coast. You can often find surfers practicing their sport on the waves at the mouth of the bay.

On the road that leads to Sint Joris Bay you will find a number of interesting places. First, there is the Aloe Farm, a large Aloe plantation that also houses a production company that manufactures various Aloe products. further on you pass Serena’s Art Factory “home of the ChiChi” sculptures. There is a souvenir shop on the site and you can also make your own Artworks during workshops. A little further down the road you get to the Ostrich Farm, where they offer tours and tell you all about the Ostrich and crocodiles they keep there.
